Black Luscious
The Truth about Black Hair
Traditionally we have been brought up
to believe that African hair only grows to a certain point, after which, it is
believed to stop growing. We have also been conditioned into the belief that
natural African hair is hard and even impossible to maintain.
For this reason, the majority of
Africana women don weaves and braids and any other artificial invention, all in
an attempt to circumnavigate their hair in its natural form.
At the Yellowbone Factory, we are adamant
that there can be nothing further from the truth! Our duty with the range of
Black Luscious hair products is to debunk all of the existing naive and
uninformed opinions about how to grow, strengthen and maintain, luscious
African locks.
Our Black Luscious range of hair
growth, care and maintenance products have proved consistently that black hair
really can and does grow with the correct care and treatment. It is not the
inability of the hair to grow long and strong, but the lack of knowledge on the
owner of the hair and the hairdressers and stylists; that retards African hair
growth.
Many African women follow incorrect
and damaging practices in the care of their hair, and thus the breakage,
falling out and terminal length that they experience. If you know how to take
proper care of your locks, you will find that natural African hair is the most
forgiving and easy to style hair type!
There are different textures, colours
and types of hair within the African community – and all that hair has one unique
commonality – it shrinks drastically and appears not to grow when it is not
properly cared for. The primary reason for this shrinkage and seeming lack of
growth; is a severe lack of moisture. The natural oils and moisture that are
produced on the scalp, do not reach the end of the hair follicle like it does
in more straight hair types; and for that reason, it is important for African
hair to be regularly, and properly moisturised.
All human beings hair grows at an
average of 2 and a ½ centimetres every month! The trick for African people, is
how to keep that length on the head and not all over the floor and on a comb!
The only secret to having and
maintaining luscious and long black locks is moisturisation, moisturisation,
moisturisation. Without a hydrating element, by virtue of its natural
structure, African hair will break and fall off. African hair cannot do without
adequate moisture. Unfortunately though, most African people have been taught
to stay away from moisture of any sort, especially water. That is
unfortunately, to the detriment of their hair. Moisture is what assists the
hair follicle to remain healthy and attached to the scalp from root to tip. It
is a common practise for the majority of African people to ply their hair with
greasy and oily substances, in an attempt to keep their hair ‘manageable’ and
easier to comb. Without adequate moisture regrettably, that oil stays on the
surface of the hair and never penetrates the hair shaft, leaving it brittle and
vulnerable to breakage.
Black Luscious products are created
with this knowledge in mind. We offer a wide range of products designed to
rehabilitate and maintain African hair. The Black Luscious product range will
not only increase the number of hair follicles on the scalp, but will also
thicken them.
Our products work well to reverse
inherited, pattern or traction alopecia baldness and/or hair thinning. With the
Black Luscious products, you will not only experience longer hair, but a fuller
and more vivacious head of strong healthy hair.
Contrary to a popular old wives tale, relaxed
African hair can also grow to extraordinary lengths if one knows the formula of
how to maintain the hair follicle attached to the scalp. Although we like to
warn against relaxing your hair too often, as it has a thinning effect on the
hair, the fact of the matter is that whether or not you put chemicals into your
hair, it will continue to grow.
African hair generally gets lost somewhere
in the juncture between ‘moisturising’ and combing it. Most people comb their
hair every day before they leave the house, after applying an oil based
application to their hair. In order to debunk this inherent myth of African
hair and its dependence on oil, it is important to point out that the
application of oil on African hair, is solely for the benefit of the scalp, and
not the actual hair follicles.
That being said, it is easier to
understand that African hair needs something to ‘moisturise’ it even after the
scalp has been sufficiently oiled.
Oiling your hair may certainly assist
in running utensils through your air, but it will not give your hair the
moisture that it so desperately needs to remain attached to your scalp.
Another terrible mistake that many
people do to their African hair, is attempt to comb it when it is dry! That
cardinal sin will leave you with a ton of loose split ends and a comb full of
dry, flaky, fallen hair. The secret to getting your hair combed, is to do so
while the hair is wet. The hair follicle is a lot stronger once it is hydrated,
in stark contrast to its brittle dry nature.
At the Yellowbone Factory we do not
believe that African hair has a terminal length which, after it is reached, the
hair stops growing. The illustrations accompanying this article are a
collection of praiseworthy examples of African ladies who know how to take care
of their hair – and boy does it show!
Somewhere in history,
the information got twisted and tangled into the universe of knots that African
people experience with poorly kempt hair. It is up to those who have an
interest in preserving these knowledge’s and saving African women the (literal)
millions that they invest in trying to get non-African peoples hair.
It is not really that
expensive to grow your African hair to unbelievable lengths; all you require
are the correct tools and a shift in perspective about African hair.
Once you have decided
that you are interested in growing your own, natural ‘weave’ as an African
woman, you will feel liberated and you will also be spending a lot less money and
a little more time on your hair care regime. Another unbelievable truth is that
the longer African hair gets, the easier it is to maintain and the less blow
drying it requires!

Mikateko – Chiawelo, Soweto
I used to believe that it was only African American people that
could get really long hair. I am now an example to everybody in my country that
black peoples hair can really grow very long if you use the right products.
Thank you so much Yellow Bone Factory. Your Black Luscious products have made
me very happy. People think I am a coloured because of how nice and long my
hair is!
Soomayia – Stanger, Durban
Although? I am Indian, I come from a family with very thin hair.
Since I came across Black Luscious, I am very content with the volume and
thickness of my hair. I thought the product was only for black people, but I am
Indian and it has worked wonder for me. I used the shampoo, leave-in
conditioner and detangling spray. I must say that the detangling spray really
does a great job of unknotting my wet hair, excellent, thank you Black
Luscious!
Nelisa, Mthata
Yoooo guys, I had no hairline before I started these products! I
just relied on my weave. After using the Night Growth Oil, I have a visible and
proper hairline. I recommend this oil to anyone with thin hair anad no hairline
like I used to be!
Kedibone - Mmabatho
I have natural hair. It’s so great what the spray does for me! I
can comb my hair comfortably, knowing that it won’t break or fall out. Before
using Black Luscious products, I had a lot of dandruff and my hair always came
out as a bunch in my comb. Now, my comb goes right through my long and silky
hair, and it comes out clean, no hair! I don’t know why all black people don’t
use these products!
Misha – Cape Canaveral
My twists used to grow, but only up to a certain length. The hair
would also be thin and brittle when I combed it out. Since I have been using
Black Luscious products, My hair is thicker, stronger and shiny! It grows
longer and just looks so much more attractive than I ever thought it could look
in its natural form. Finally there is a range of products that makes our hair
really grow!!!
